Caffeine is the only ingredient in a typical pre-workout with strong, consistent evidence for an acute performance benefit, and coffee delivers caffeine perfectly well. Beta-alanine. Here’s where the marketing falls apart. Beta-alanine only works chronically, at around 3.2 grams every day for two to four weeks or more, building up muscle carnosine. A single scoop does nothing acutely. Nothing, except produce that tingling, prickling sensation across your face and hands. That’s paresthesia, it’s harmless, it fades in 60 to 90 minutes, and it has no relationship whatsoever to how well the product works. Women feel it and assume the supplement is kicking in. It isn’t. It’s a side effect.

Creatine. Excellent ingredient, wrong delivery vehicle. Creatine works through daily saturation of your muscles, at 3 to 5 grams a day, and the timing is irrelevant. Putting it in a pre-workout is convenience, not strategy, and most scoops carry less than a full 5 gram dose anyway.

Everything else, meaning the nootropics, the exotic extracts, and the alphabet soup of trademarked compounds, has thin evidence at best, and often sits at doses too small to matter.

Citrulline. The best reason to buy a pre-workout. Coffee contains none, and there is no way to get blood-flow support from a mug. If you want the pump and the improved oxygen delivery to working muscle, you need a supplement.

Electrolytes. Some formulas include real sodium and magnesium. If you sweat heavily or train in heat, that matters, and coffee does nothing for you there.

Precise, repeatable dosing. A label says 180 mg and delivers 180 mg every single time. Coffee cannot promise that, as you’ll see below.

Stomach tolerance. Coffee is acidic, and for some women that’s a problem on an empty stomach at 6am. A powder in water can sit better.

Flavor and consistency. The best supplement is the one you actually take. If a zero-calorie fruit punch gets you to the gym four days a week and black coffee doesn’t, that’s not a trivial point. It’s the whole point.

Pre-workout’s flaw is the opposite. The dose is exact, and often exactly wrong for you. Most scoops carry 150 to 300 mg and are formulated around an 80 to 90 kg user. The fix is the same for both. Work out your target from your body weight. Start at the bottom of the range, or below it. Oral contraceptives roughly double caffeine’s half-life. The estrogen in combined oral contraceptives inhibits CYP1A2, the liver enzyme that clears caffeine, pushing the half-life from around 5.4 hours to nearly 8. Medication. Stimulant ADHD medication, SSRIs and SNRIs, thyroid medication, and blood pressure medication all warrant a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before either option.
